Concrete Furniture Care & Maintenance Guide

Preserving Your GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete)

Gumi Works pieces are engineered for commercial-grade durability, yet their hand-cast concrete nature requires mindful care. Because our polished concrete is a "living" material, it develops a unique character over time. This guide helps you maintain the tactile finish and structural integrity of your bespoke concrete furniture.

The First 14 Days: Curing the Concrete Sealer

Your piece arrives with a professional concrete sealer that continues to harden for two weeks after installation.

During this critical curing phase:

  • Avoid heavy use or leaving standing liquids on the concrete surface.
  • Protect the surface from other trades or tools if renovations are ongoing.

Daily Rituals: Cleaning Concrete Surfaces

  • Routine Cleaning: Use a damp microfibre cloth with pH-neutral soap. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners which can strip the protective coating.
  • Heat & Scratches: Always use trivets for hot pans and chopping boards for food prep. Do not drag sharp or heavy objects across the concrete tabletop.
  • Stain Management: While Gumi Works products are stain-resistant, wipe up acidic spills (lemon, wine, oils) promptly to prevent etching the sealer.

Long-term Concrete Maintenance

To maintain the deep, tactile lustre of your cast concrete, we recommend applying a food-grade wax (beeswax or carnauba) every few months. This creates a “sacrificial layer” that protects the concrete finish from daily wear and tear.

Note: A comprehensive Concrete Care & Maintenance manual is provided with every Gumi Works commission to ensure your artisan concrete lasts for decades.
