Picture this: a bespoke mobile catering trailer tailored for a street food fanatic with an eye for style and an impeccable palate. The mission was clear—to create a sleek, industrial look that’s both eye-catching and minimalist. This mobile kitchen had to navigate bustling city streets with ease while also being robust enough to tackle distant events. It needed to be compact, sturdy, and ready to conquer any traffic-related challenges.

Before this culinary dream could hit the road, the Gumi Works team embarked on an exhilarating journey. Imagine brainstorming 3D sketches, carefully balancing the box on chases, and fine-tuning the hitch’s downforce—all while ensuring it stayed within the 100kg limit. Phew! It was an adventure filled with excitement and challenges, but in the end, it was incredibly rewarding.

Now, let’s talk about the materials used. They began with a reliable donor trailer chassis, aiming for that ideal 1300-1500kg rating. The exterior was clad in sleek 0.9mm gauge black steel sheets, complete with custom-made corners and flush openings. To guarantee strength and durability, they opted for 2.5mm gauge square steel tubing for the frame, ensuring it could withstand any shock, shake, or gust of wind. Inside, waterproofed OCB panels and stylish white and grey metro tiles gave it that perfect blend of industrial chic.

As for the base, it started as a flatbed trailer, seemingly converted from a caravan. After a brief pitstop for a wheel and brake service, they coated it with rust protection and a smart coat of black paint. Since the base’s wheels protruded outside of the frame, they had to extend the frame using 50x50x3mm steel profiles. The result? A seamless fusion between the frame and the wheels, held together with expert welding and steel tubing.

Now, let’s shift our focus to the doors and serving windows. After waterproofing the backing boards, they adorned the exterior with a custom-made chevron wood mosaic geometric pattern. This not only added a touch of elegance but also formed the frame for the serving window and door, showcasing brilliant design thinking.

The serving window was a masterpiece, splitting into two folding flaps—one for efficient serving and the other for sheltering against rain. Hooks on the top flap made it a breeze to hang festoon lights, creating a cosy atmosphere at evening markets and private events.

Inside, a two-level worktop made life easier for the staff while allowing customers to catch a glimpse of the delectable dishes in progress. Steel cable conduits and industrial-style steel electric plugs added a finishing touch, complementing the overall aesthetic. Designed mainly for vegan dishes with a sprinkle of meat options, the kitchen featured a double gas burner on the worktop. Heavy-duty equipment like the griddle and fryer ran on electricity, providing versatility for various events.

Storage wasn’t overlooked either. A plain white cupboard on one side provided ample space, while the lower worktops on the other served multiple purposes. The gas bottle storage, matching the cladding sheet, was installed, tested, and certified by a qualified engineer.

To ensure stability when parked, rear stabiliser legs were added to both corners. And for safe travels on the road, the trailer was expertly wired with traffic indicators using a 7-pin connection cable diagram.
